In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Tackle Youth Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the younger generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.
"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the deal was signed.
The late summer uprising was sparked by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Terms of the New Political Partnership
According to the formal agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's older political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Political Consultations Taking Place
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with several leading political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the uprising.
Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
