In the early hours of Saturday, accounts surfaced of significant blasts rocking the Iranian capital, following claims from Israel that it had carried out a preventative strike.
Powerful Explosions and Plumes of Smoke Reported in Central Tehran
According to on-the-ground reports, two loud blasts were audible in the city on Saturday. Simultaneously, two plumes of dense smoke were seen billowing over the centre and east of the Iranian capital.
“The type of explosions indicates that this is a missile attack,” a media outlet reported, though it did not initially offer further details.
Background: Escalating Tensions and Recent Events
The incident occurs against a background of severely escalated tensions in the Middle East. Major events leading up to this attack involve:
- US Military Buildup: A massive buildup of US naval forces in the Middle East, featuring the repositioning of carrier strike groups.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Latest talks between the United States and Iran on Tehran's nuclear programme concluded without a deal, with suggestions of further talks scheduled.
- Official Rhetoric: Prior to the strike, a senior US official had labeled Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and delivered warnings regarding its weapons development.
- Ultimatum: Reportedly, a deadline of roughly two weeks had been given to Iran to settle the atomic standoff or confront serious repercussions.
Iranian Response
In response to prior accusations, Iranian officials had charged the US of spreading “falsehoods” about its defensive capabilities. Officials dismissed assertions about missile development and protest deaths as baseless.
The situation is fluid, with additional reports anticipated as the situation develops.
