An Generosity of Strangers: How a Man I Had Just Met Helped Me Secure the Role That Altered My Path

During the final years of the 1980s, I was embarking on a backpacking trip to Europe with a companion. Since my travel mate was exploring pursuing a master’s degree in New York, we had planned a fortnight visit there before heading to London.

We arrived at the student accommodation, a large ten-floor structure on the UWS called International House. Setting down our luggage, we headed straight to the canteen, where we grabbed food, sat down, and started talking to people eating there.

Beside me was an individual of Iraqi origin enrolled in an engineering program at a prestigious New York university. He inquired what I did, and I told him that I had newly finished with a scientific background and had been working on studies with electron microscopy.

He pointed out that there was an microscopy facility at the institution – close to the engineering department, which was why he was aware of it. He proposed that I consider applying for a position with them. I laughed it off, explaining that I was heading off to Europe and, more critically, I did not possess a US visa.

The next day I ventured out, returning to the canteen that evening. The man from Iraq walked over to me and told me that he had set up a meeting for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Since he had taken the effort, I showed up for the discussion – but right away informed my interviewer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

As is common in NYC – a place where everything seems achievable – she responded: “That can be arranged. What's your start date?” I missed my plane to London.

I worked there for three years. One of the benefits was that I also received free tuition at Columbia, and I took advantage to earn a master’s of international affairs.

I never saw that student again and I don’t even know his name, but his remarkable generosity altered my destiny in so many ways. I didn't possess the confidence or self-assurance to reach out at an Ivy League university and request employment. And, I had long dreamed to pursue education overseas, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that educational benefit.

What's more, that gig at Columbia resulted in a role in Europe where I got to know my handsome spouse from France, with whom I currently share four amazing children. This was a pivotal life event. That helpful person changed my trajectory in life, and I’m forever grateful.
